A night-shift truck driver on probation, who had about five hours of potential rest in the 72 hours before the crash and had been using methylamphetamine, drifted repeatedly into the emergency lane before ploughing into four police officers at a roadside intercept, killing all four. A sleep physician told the court the sleep deprivation alone was comparable to a blood alcohol level well above 0.1 and, combined with drugs, had a multiplicative effect. The driver pleaded guilty to culpable driving particularised as negligent, fatigued and drug-affected driving and was jailed for 22 years.
